Dr. Janet Muñiz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at California State University, Long Beach. She is a first-generation scholar from a working-class Mexican immigrant background. She attended community college before transferring to the University of California, Santa Barbara where she obtained a B.A. in Feminist Studies (2011) and was involved in Chicana feminist organizations doing outreach and mentoring local youth. She also received an M.A. in Cultural Studies from Claremont Graduate University (2014) and completed her Ph.D. in Sociology (2021) from the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Muñiz has taught courses at all three segments of California’s public higher education system including the University of California (UC), California State University (CSU), and California Community College (CCC). Dr. Muñiz teaches and does research around Latinx communities, ethnic identity, and entrepreneurship—her current book project looks at the gentrification of her hometown Santa Ana, CA focusing on its downtown business district.
